What's your type? Are you an ESFP? INTJ? ENFJ?
If you
are familiar with these questions and the four-letter combinations then
you probably have been exposed to Carl Jung's psychological
types. Like most people, you probably learned about psychological
types from having been exposed to the Myers and Briggs Type IndictorŽ
(MBTIŽ)--one of the most widely-used personality questionnaires in the
world.
If you are not familiar with these questions and the
letter combinations, don't worry. There are plenty of websites to
help you learn more about Jung's psychological types and the MBTIŽ. The
links section contains a number of these sources. The
design of Political | Types assumes that the visitor will have some
knowledge of Jungian psychological types and the MBTIŽ. If you are
new to this topic, we suggest that you start by reading the
"Introductory Readings" on psychological type provided at the following
sites: The Center for the Application of Psychological Type (CAPT) website and The Myers & Briggs Foundation (M&BF) website. Both sites contain an overview of key concepts related to Jung's psychological types and the MBTIŽ.
We
suggest you start with the M&BF site and particularly the section
on "My MBTI Personality Type--MBTI Basics." This section will introduce
you to the basic preference dichotomies: Extraversion and Introversion,
Sensing and Intuition, Thinking and Feeling, and Judging and
Perceiving.
Once you have learned about the basic
preferences be sure to read about "Type Dynamics" and "Type
Development". Many people only learn about the basic preferences
and thus miss some of the richness of the realities of "type."
At
some point you might want to complete a questionnaire about your
psychological type preferences. If so, please make sure you
consider the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. To date,
the MBTIŽ is the most validated instrument, although there are other
versions available on the web. The links sections will lead you to a
couple of these instruments. If you do choose to complete one of
these questionnaires, please keep in mind they are of unknown validity
and reliability.
If you would like to complete the MBTIŽ, we suggest you contact APT
or CAPT for a referral or ask your teacher, pastor, or career
counselor. Many of these individuals are qualified to administer
and interpret the MBTIŽ and do so for free or a nominal fee.
