Poll Overview 2007/10/07 21:36 Karma: 0
This post provides an overview of the "Type & Politics Poll".

Introduction. The relationship of personality to politics has interested humankind for millenia. Only recently, however, have political psychologists begun to explore this relationship using validated personality questionnaires. Most of this research has used trait-based "Big 5" personality measures. Few studies have looked at politics from the perspective of psychological type and the MBTI.

What is the poll's purpose? To promote further research and discussion about the relationship between psychological type and political orientations.

Who is participating in the poll? Members of various Psychological Type Associations in Australia, Canada, The United Kingdom, and The United States were invited to participate in the first round of the poll. Visitors who sign up for e-mail notification also participate.

Why were these members selected to participate? Two reasons. First, members of these associations generally can provide accurate assessments of their MBTI preferences. Second, the membership covers countries with a similar political heritage that is useful for a first international study of this kind.

May I participate in the study if I'm not a member of a Psychological Type Association? Yes, please feel free to participate, and view the results. Simply enter "notapt" when asked for the study password. Also, please feel free to recommend the poll to people you know are confident in their type preferences.

Are my responses anonymous? Yes.

How are my responses used? First, your responses are added to a file containing responses from other participants. Results from this file are summarized and reported to participants after they submit their poll responses. You may view bar-graph summaries as well as type-table summaries. Second, responses will be analyzed in more depth and results reported here on Political | Types as well as in Psychological Type venues.

Will results from this poll be compared with other polls? Yes. Results from this poll will be compared with national opinion polls. These results will be posted here on Politicial | Types as soon as possible after the poll here is completed.

How many times will the poll be offered? The "Type & Politics Poll" is scheduled to be offered at 3-month intervals. The first poll is scheduled to start the first full week of November 2007. Other polls are scheduled for the first full week of February, May, August, & November 2008. The final poll is scheduled for the week following the completion of the United States presidential election in November 2008.

How long will each poll be available? Each poll will be open and available Monday-Friday during the first full week of each scheduled month.

How long does it take to complete each poll? Pre-tests of the poll indicated most people complete the poll in about 2 to 3 minutes.

How are the questions chosen? Questions about your type are used to compare type responses to political opinions and orientations. Questions about political opinions and orientations are selected from national representative studies to allow comparison of poll results with these studies.

Who is conducting this poll? I am conducting this poll. My name is Bob Boozer. I am a Professor of Management at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, USA. My colleagues and I have been researching the relationship between psychological type and organizational politics for more than 10 years. More recently we have been focusing on type and politics at the national level. You can learn more about me here.

Is this poll being sponsored by any special interest group? No. However, the International APT Board of Directors agreed to support the poll by e-mailing the APT membership to announce the poll. The School of Business Foundation at Stetson University also provided funds to support the poll. These are the only groups and actions supporting the poll.
